Pyramid Visit—with an Egyptologist!

Today, Glen Williams (AUC finance) and Scott Hibbert (AUC Poly Sci) and I went to the pyramids in Giza. We took along with us Valentina (I never have learned her last name), one of Glen’s many girlfriends since moving to Cairo. She is an Italien Egyptologist, and very knowledgeable about Pyramids and Middle Kingdom Egypt, as well as Egyptian religion. We took a 35 LE cab ride out to Giza, and walked completely around all three Pyramids—something I’ve never done. We even walked out to the smallest of the great Pyramids, out where there were few tourists walking. Tourists tend to stay just between the two larger Pyramids. We then paid an extra 50 LE to go throught he solar boat museum—where they have dug out a complete solar boat throught to symbolize the journey the sungod Ra makes with the sun across the sky each day. We then walked all the way to the Sphinx and walked around the compound there. We then took a break with softdrinks and water at a covered café next to the Sound and Light show venue. By now we were all exhausted, and grabbed a cab back to Maadi. We ate at Abu Sid restaurant on Road 7. When I got home that night, I was too tired to read (the sun really takes it out of you, and it was near 40 degrees Celcius) and went to bed at 8:30pm! But a good day thoroughly seeing the Pyramids.
